Road rage attack sparks four-truck crash on M80 Ring Rd

Police are hunting for a luxury car who caused a four-truck crash and left a man fighting for life in a road rage attack on a Melbourne freeway.

Emergency services were called to the Western Ring Rd in Fawkner about 1pm on Thursday after reports of a crash involving four trucks.

It’s believed a truck was overtaken by a dark-coloured Range Rover near the Sydney Rd overpass inbound.

The driver of the Range Rover then suddenly braked in front of the truck, forcing the truck and three others to crash.

It’s understood the first truck managed to avoid hitting the Range Rover which caused a domino effect with the other vehicles.

The Range Rover fled the scene and the driver is yet to be located.

A 65-year-old truck driver was taken to the Royal Melbourne Hospital with life-threatening injuries to his lower body.

He remains in a critical condition on Friday morning.

A Victoria Police spokeperson said no one else was seriously injured.

Acting Assistant Commissioner Road Policing Justin Goldsmith said the crash was caused by “absolute stupidity” and showed a “lack of respect”.

“We are always calling for any road users to be respectful and vigilant on the roads and be present while they are driving,” he told 3AW.

“Free of distractions, making sure they are aware of their surroundings, driving to regulations, keeping below the speed limit but most of all being respectful of everybody else on the roads.

“Whether you are a truck driver or a driver of a small vehicle, it’s really important.”

The freeway was brought to a halt for more than three hours with hundreds of motorists impacted by the delays and lane closures.

Some motorists were spotted getting out of their vehicles and standing in the middle of the road to wait.

Just hours earlier, motorists were stuck in peak hour traffic on the freeway when a truck crashed into an unoccupied stationary car.

The impact forced 400 litres of diesel to spill onto the road.

Anyone who has dashcam footage or any other information is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
