Nambrok estate: Historic Victorian property sold to Gippsland farming family

One of the state’s most historic properties, previously owned by the prominent McGauran family, has stayed in Victorian hands.

Snapped up: The landmark property Nambrok estate in Gippsland has sold to a local farming family.

The buyer of one of Victoria’s most historic properties can be revealed.

Land titles show Gippsland’s Nambrok estate was purchased by South Gippsland farmers Malcolm and Genevieve Davies from Foster, who run Greenwald Investments.

The estate was home of the Melbourne Cup winner Patrobas and was sold by the prominent McGauran family, which includes former Agriculture Minister Peter McGauran and former Senator Julian McGauran.

The 989ha mixed farming, lifestyle and equine property went under contract at the end of November last year.

Nambrok was initially advertised at around $20 million when it first hit the market in August 2019, but it is understood the property was quoted at around $12 million when it sold.

Nambrok features a grand Victorian homestead built in the 1860s, with meticulously preserved features.

It was built in the 19th century for pastoralist and Gippsland pioneer John King, grandson of NSW’s third governor, Philip King.

John and Edith Widdis bought the property in 1908 and in 1915 Edith became the first female owner to triumph at the Melbourne Cup with Patrobas, who was trained and stabled at Nambrok.

At the time it was listed for sale, the McGauran family said they were grateful to have been custodians of the property.

“The time has come to see Nambrok flourish in the hands of new owners,” a statement from the family said at the time.

“Everyone who has lived or worked at Nambrok knows its special appeal and the rare beauty of Nambrok House.”

The property was sold by Elders.

Mr Davies was contacted for comment, but did not respond.
