THE historic Nambrok estate at Gippsland has sold, after more than a year on the market.

The stately property, owned by the prominent McGauran family, went under contract earlier this week.

The price has not been disclosed, but it is understood the 989 hectare property was being quoted at around $12 million.

It was initially advertised at around $20 million when it first hit the market last year.

The buyers are believed to be an Australian family.

The mixed farming and lifestyle estate features a grand Victorian homestead built in the 1860s, with meticulously preserved features.

Nambrok was built in the 19th century for pastoralist and Gippsland pioneer John King, grandson of NSW’s third governor, Philip King.

John and Edith Widdis bought the property in 1908 and in 1915 Edith became the first female owner to triumph at the Melbourne Cup with Patrobas, who was trained and stabled at Nambrok.

The McGauran family, which includes former Agriculture Minister Peter McGauran and former Senator Julian McGauran, developed the holding during their ownership to make it one of Australia’s most significant properties.
