A GRAND Victorian homestead built in the 1860s is the centrepiece of historic Nambrok estate, which was once home to a Melbourne Cup winning horse.
Owned by the prominent McGauran family since 1985, Nambrok was built in the 19th century for pastoralist and Gippsland pioneer John King, grandson of NSW’s third governor, Philip King.

John and Edith Widdis bought the property in 1908 and in 1915 Edith became the first female owner to triumph at the Melbourne Cup with Patrobas, who was trained and stabled at Nambrok.
The McGauran family, which includes former Agriculture Minister Peter McGauran and former Senator Julian McGauran, have further developed the holding during their ownership, making it one of Australia’s most historic and significant properties.
The family has now decided to sell its pastoral interests, including Nambrok.
“The time has come to see Nambrok flourish in the hands of new owners,” a statement from the family said.
“Everyone who has lived or worked at Nambrok knows its special appeal and the rare beauty of Nambrok House.
“The family are grateful to have been custodians for the past three decades of a unique part of Gippsland agricultural history.”
One of the holding’s defining features is its magnificent mansion situated on an elevated position capturing panoramic views of the 989ha property, the Great Dividing Range and the Strzelecki Ranges.
Influenced by styles derived from the Dutch, North Italian Renaissance and Lombardic Romanesque, the four-bedroom homestead was meticulously renovated in 2012 and has high ceilings throughout, chandelier lighting and polished timber floors. It includes sun-filled living rooms, grand open fireplaces as well as an adjoining five-bedroom residence.
There is also a championship size grass tennis court, a three-bedroom brick veneer manager’s residence, original stable with nine horse stalls and six stables, eight-stand raised board shearing shed, cattle yards, modern machinery shed, hay shed and an authentic storage shed with sliding door.
Nambrok has been conservatively run under existing management, currently running 540 beef breeders plus progeny and bulls.
The property has been subdivided into 19 main paddocks with numerous fenced-in tree plantations and is watered by 18 catchment dams and four bores.
Selling agent Anthony Stevens said Nambrok was a flagship estate suited to a range of pursuits including livestock, cropping, equine and leisure or hospitality.
