Melbourne teen wins Mazda in Run for the Kids prize draw

Getting a call to say he had won a new car in the middle of class was the last thing Melbourne teenager Lachy Bradford was expecting — especially as he isn’t old enough to have a licence.

Lachy Bradford is learning to drive in his own set of wheels, after the 16-year-old won a Mazda3 in the Herald Sun/Transurban Run for the Kids.

The Viewbank teenager was the lucky winner of the car donated by Mazda after he entered the competition when he registered for the fun run, which was later called off because of the pandemic.

The high school student, whose family run in the event every year as part of team Give Me 5, said when he found out he had won a car he was in an online class.

“I didn’t think it was real,” he said. “Everyone was just shocked.”

Though Lachy is too young to drive, mum Vicky Rushworth said she would take good care of it for him.

“The day we got the car was the first day he got to drive it, we were out that night driving around the neighbourhood saying hello to friends showing off the new wheels,” she said.

Run for the Kids still raised $670,000 for the Good Friday Appeal despite the event’s cancellation.
