There’s power in numbers for mum Donna Copperwaite as she prepares for her eighth Herald Sun/Transurban Run for the Kids.
It’s become an annual tradition for the Clifton Springs family and about 30 friends and supporters to compete in the fun run, a major fundraiser for the Good Friday Appeal, as Team Jack.
The event is a way for the family to give back to the Royal Children’s Hospital, which has provided world-class care to their son Jack since he was born with the rare genetic disorder Crouzon syndrome.
The seven-year-old has already undergone several procedures, including a tracheotomy and major operations on his skull and stomach. He also wears a neck brace.
Jack is now a happy grade two student with a boisterous streak and a “beautiful nature” who loves playing with cars and watching footy, but he still has a long road ahead. He will likely require more facial surgeries as he grows.
“We really wanted to support the hospital and all the amazing things they’ve done for us,” Mrs Copperwaite said.
Run for the Kids is a way for the community to rally around the family, many supporters donning eye-catching green costumes and tutus.
“We love it and find it a really great atmosphere, it’s one of our favourite days of the year,” she said. “We love getting dressed up and we always get on the news.”

Since entering their first Run for the Kids eight years ago, the fundraising has taken on a life of its own.
Team Jack is now a non-profit organisation that sponsors a bed at RCH and two rooms at Ronald McDonald House.
Though some members of Team Jack will take on the 15km long route, Mrs Copperwaite said most will opt for the 5.2km Woodlea short course.
Families and groups with children are encouraged to compete in 15th Run for the Kids on March 29, with under 15s registered by January 31 eligible for a $15 discount.
Registration is now open at runforthekids.com.au.
