Docklands has received a much-needed boost with the opening of the waterfront precinct’s first international five-star hotel.

The 189-room Melbourne Marriott Hotel Docklands has been dubbed a “resort-style haven” with its key feature a 28m rooftop infinity pool and bar offering panaromic views across the city.

On Waterfront Way in The District Docklands leisure and entertainment precinct, the $250m hotel was designed by DKO Architecture and developed by the Capital Alliance group headed by Mohan Du.

Its curved facade takes design cues from the aerodynamic contours of yachts in Victoria Harbour.

“This gentle and soothing motif transitions harmoniously from the exterior of the building through to the interior, complemented by the fluted glass windows of the lobby, with art installations gently ushering guests through to the connecting laneway,” says a hotel statement.

The lobby features polished brass golden chains by sculptor Alexander Knox, while pendant lights by Melbourne lighting designer Volker Haug “set a scene of comfortable intimacy throughout the dining spaces”.

Marriott vice-president for Australia, New Zealand and Pacific Sean Hunt said it was the first Marriott-branded hotel to open in Australia in 20 years.

“We now operate a portfolio of seven hotels in Melbourne and 27 in the country,” he said.

“Despite an uncertain time through Covid, we are seeing the growth and confidence in travel re-emerge, and we look forward to being a part of the revitalisation of the travel sector throughout Australia.”

Docklands has been hit hard by pandemic shutdowns, with lack of tourists, office workers and local visitors leading to many businesses closing down or struggling to survive.

Lord Mayor Sally Capp said the Marriot’s opening was a huge vote of confidence in the future of Docklands.

“This highlights that major investors know how much potential lies in this beautiful precinct.

Docklands is featuring heavily in our Christmas Festival, showcasing everything from night markets to our spectacular drone show,” she said.

“Quality, brand-new accommodation will play a key role in attracting visitors as we continue to activate the precinct over the coming months and years.”

The new hotel has dining venues, including upmarket Archer’s, whose interior has signs of Melbourne’s historic bridges and train stations.

Ada’s, in the hotel lobby, is in a space where guests can work, socialise or relax with light snacks and drinks.

Other venues include laneway cafe Corsia, and rooftop bar Sunset House — one of the few west-facing bars in Melbourne “looking out to dazzling sunsets and sweeping views across Melbourne”.

Also on offer is the first exclusive M Club executive lounge in Australia, featuring a 24-hour residential-style living room serving breakfast items and light snacks during the day, and beverages and canapes at night.

Hotel general manager Girish Talreja said: We look forward to establishing our hotel as a must-stay hotel for both locals and visitors to the city thanks to our unrivalled dining outlets and spectacular rooftop pool and bar.”
