Docklands’ first luxury five-star hotel and featuring a rooftop bar and infinity pool is set to open soon, giving the waterfront suburb a much-needed boost.

The $250m Melbourne Marriott Docklands Hotel has 189 rooms with views of the CBD, Bolte Bridge and Port Phillip Bay.

Located in NewQuay near the Melbourne Star attraction and The District Docklands leisure and entertainment precinct, the hotel’s design references the waterfront and the city’s urban fabric.

Bluestone features prominently, while the many hotel entrances give a nod to Melbourne’s famous laneways.

The building’s “graceful curves” take cues from the yachts in the nearby harbour.

The level 15 rooftop bar and pool area has timber and stone flooring, banquet-style seating and battened ceilings to reflect the interior of a luxury yacht.

Developer Mohan Du, founder of site owner Capital Alliance, said he was thrilled with the outcome of the $250m project.

“The building’s design is uniquely elegant, and adds an element of sophistication to

the evolving architectural landscape in Docklands,” he said.

Designer DKO Architecture’s head of interiors, Michael Drescher, said the aim was to create spaces which connected each visitor to place.

“Cues from architecture, site history, and local culture are all influences on the interiors,” he said.

The hotel has five event and entertainment spaces, including the Promenade Room that can host up to 200 guests seated theatre-style or for a cocktail reception.

It will also be Australia’s first Marriott with an M Club executive lounge for exclusive access to members, and those booking an M Club level room.

It will have timber and marble elements while the adjoining outdoor terrace offers an al fresco space.

Hotel general manager Girish Talreja said he was confident that the Marriott “would allow our guests to work and unwind on their terms”.
