A man has been taken to hospital in a critical condition after paramedics were called to the Urbnsurf wave park in Tullamarine.

Ambulance Victoria confirmed they had gone to the Melrose Drive venue at 11.30am for the patient in his 40s, who had suffered a medical episode.

“A man has been taken to Royal Melbourne Hospital in a critical condition,” a spokeswoman said.

A review has indicated the surfer was not involved in a collision.

“Our footage reveals the surfer collapsed while paddling out and did not hit the wall,” URBNSURF said.

Urbnsurf, which opened in 2020, has become highly popular.

It uses technology to pump out waves for boardriders at a variety of levels.

A spokeswoman said park staff responded as soon as the incident occurred, including by supporting the man’s friends.

“Our first priority is the health and safety of our customers,” she said.

The park’s operators are fully co-operating with first responders and police.

The facility will remain closed until further notice.
