From Benalla to Melbourne’s CBD, this is how much every mayor and CEO makes

Victorian council executives are making up to $500,000 a year and mayors rake in more than $100,000. See how your council stacks up.

Top executives at select Victorian councils are raking in up to half a million dollars each year, while some mayors are making more than $100,000.

Data compiled by the Herald Sun shows salaries across the state’s 80 councils range from the City of Melbourne chief executive’s $490,000-$499,999 salary to the Indigo Shire chief executive’s $190,000 paycheck.

The highest paid chief executive outside Melbourne is Martin Cutter at the City of Greater Geelong, who earns more than $430,000 a year.

Mr Cutter requested a freeze on his salary in July last year for 12 months in recognition of the financial impact of Covid.

The highest salary band reported for Geelong in the most recent annual report was between $550,000 – $559,999, one of the highest in the entire state.

The Herald Sun was able to obtain salary bands for key management roles from each council’s annual reports.

Mayoral and chief executive salaries are determined based on a council’s population and annual income.

Council chief executives in “category one” councils – areas with the smallest populations and lowest incomes – make up to $269,000.

Category one mayors make up to $62,884 per year.

The mayor of Queenscliffe, which has 2995 residents, is paid the same as the Mount Alexander Shire mayor, with 18,729 residents, at $62,884.

Category two chief executives make anywhere between $230,000 and $390,000 per year, while mayors in these districts – such as Bass Coast, Yarra City and the Surf Coast – earn up to $81,204.

The mayor of Maroondah, with a population of 119,149 people, and Moyne, which has 16,600 residents, both make $81,204.

Salaries for category three executives range between $260,000 and $489,999 and mayors take home approximately $100,434

The highest paid mayor is Lord Mayor Sally Capp, who makes $200,870.

Chief executives at some of the state’s smallest council areas – including Buloke, West Wimmera and Yarriambiack are paid up to $230,000 – while Queenscliffe chief executive Martin Gill takes home approximately $244,566 for overseeing a population of 2995 Victorians.
