Victoria is in for a hot and rainy week, as experts warn possibly severe thunderstorms are on the way for parts of the state.

Monday is tipped to reach 28C with partly cloudy conditions.

But Miriam Bradley from the Bureau of Meteorology said as the afternoon approaches, some regions of Victoria have the chance of severe thunderstorms.

“Monday will see generally sunny conditions across Melbourne and the northern parts of the state, with more clouds in Gippsland and the south west,” she said.

“This afternoon and evening, clouds will start to build with the chance of a thunderstorm. It’s likely to impact most of the state including Melbourne. It’s likely they will be patchy – hit or miss rainfall and storms.

“There’s the chance of severe storms, mainly in northwest Victoria, including Mildura. It may also hit the northern suburbs in Melbourne.”

Ms Bradley said there would be similar conditions on Tuesday, with a top of 30C expected in Melbourne.

“There is again the chance of showers and storms across the state in the afternoon and evening, but there will be a lot of drier periods as well,” she said.

“We can also expect warmer nights, tonight and tomorrow, with a minimum temperature of 19C.”

On Wednesday there is the chance of heavy rain for Victoria, including in Melbourne with expected falls of 10 to 20mm. It will reach 25C.

Thursday and Friday will see cloudy conditions with cooler maximum temperatures of 23C and 22C respectively. There is the chance of light showers in Melbourne.

Victorians can expect much drier weather on the weekend with Saturday and Sunday reaching 28C with mostly sunny conditions.

It comes after incessant rain wreaked havoc across the state last week, with residents in Seymour and Yea told to evacuate over rising floodwaters on January 8.

Horrific Christmas storms also lashed country communities last month, leaving a trail of destruction and four people dead.

Two bodies were discovered in floodwaters in East Gippsland, while a 44-year-old man was killed when he was hit by a falling tree at his Caringal home.

A fourth person, a young boy, was killed after being struck by a large tree branch near Shepparton following wild storms.
