A work of street art in Glen Huntly Rd, Caulfield, which was suspected to be by famed artist Banksy is likely not real, an expert says.
University of Melbourne Professor of Criminology Alison Young, a leading expert in graffiti and street art, told the Sunday Herald Sun the work is likely a “spoof Banksy”.
Prof Young, who has previously been dubbed “Banksy’s favourite criminologist” said there was a tradition of artists and writers creating works in the style of Banksy “either for their own amusement or to poke fun at Banksy himself”.
“That might well be what’s happening here,” she said.
“I’d be fairly sure this is not by Banksy.”
The artwork, on an existing mural above the White Law Bindery Printers shop, was spotted by dog trainer and art enthusiast Jordan Weizman last week.
Mr Weizman told last week’s Sunday Herald Sun he thought, “it’s gotta be Banksy” when he spotted a signature similar to Banksy’s.
Banksy has previously visited Melbourne, but his works have repeatedly been destroyed by construction workers or graffiti clean-up crews.
