Did Banksy pay a visit to Melbourne?

Dog trainer and art enthusiast Jordan Weizman said he spotted what he believes to be a Banksy artwork on his way to work on Thursday.

He believes the street artist made a whimsical addition to the Creation of Adam mural above the White Law Bindery Printers shop on Glen Huntly Rd in Caulfield.

Mr Weizman thinks Banksy added the title “How to Grow Apples” to the cover of a book Adam is holding towards God in the biblical mural.

“I drive along the same road every day to work. But when I saw the new artworks, I thought, ‘It can’t be’,” Mr Weizman said.

“I had to drive past it a second time before I saw the tag. That’s when I thought ‘I think this is it, it’s gotta be Banksy’.”

Mr Weizman said he was fascinated by Banksy, a London street artist whose has kept his identity a secret.

Mr Weizman said only a professional like Banksy could have added the title to the book.

The work is also signed with Banksy’s signature.

He said he hoped the artwork was appreciated and protected.

Banksy has previously visited Melbourne, but his works have repeatedly been destroyed by construction workers or grafitti clean-up crews.

In 2016, three stencils of rats painted by Banksy in 2003 in ACDC Lane in the CBD were destroyed by construction workers.

In 2013, a stencil of a rat and a girl hugging a bomb on the wall of a church in Fitzroy was painted over.

In 2012, another Banksy artwork in Greville St was also destroyed by construction workers.

In 2010 cleaners from Melbourne City Council scrubbed a Banksy work off a wall in Hosier Land.

Banksy’s management was contacted for comment.
