A “bubbly” and “positive” young man has been remembered after a fatal car crash in Toorak.

Marcus Watson, 20, was driving his parents BMW with his girlfriend when he lost control and hit a tree and burst into flames near the Toorak RSL.

Police said the vehicle reportedly crashed into the tree on Clendon Rd near the corner of Toorak and Orrong Road, just after 8pm on Thursday.

Emergency services were called, however Watson and the female passenger, a 20-year-old from Berwick, died at the scene.

Police are investigating the circumstances surrounding the crash.

Neighbours tried to save the pair but the couple tragically died at the scene.

Mr Watson’s sister, Gabby Watson, said her heart was broken.

“My baby brother. I never said it enough but I love you,” she wrote on social media.

“You will always be my baby brother. My heart is broken and it can never be fixed.

“You are and always will be my world.

“You taught me to pull up when I needed to and made me happy.”

Ms Watson said she was proud to be his sister.

“I keep thinking you’re gonna (sic) walk in the door and can’t get my head around you’re in heaven,” she said.

“Now and forever. I love you Marcus Liam Watson.”

It comes as a Clendon Rd resident said he heard the crash but the car was already fully engulfed by the time he and other neighbours arrived to assist.

“It was too hot to get close to and as soon as we tried to assist, the fuel tank blew up,” he told the Herald Sun.

“I don’t think we were ever going to be able to get to the driver and passenger.”

Other residents also said people from outside of the suburb often speed through the road.

“I think we take this road for granted because it is so quiet and a nice place to live,” one man said.

“We need speed bumps or something to deter people speeding.”

The latest road fatality takes the state’s road toll to 50 for 2024, less than the 63 lives lost for the same period last year.

Anyone who witnessed the crash or has dashcam footage is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
