Restaurant king Chris Lucas has ditched all deals with delivery app partners in the wake of Deliveroo’s collapse.
Takeaway services across Lucas Melbourne outlets such as Baby Pizza and Hawker Hall will now be done in-house, providing more opportunities for staff.
Customers will be able to order online or over the phone, and pick-up directly from the restaurants.
Mr Lucas said the new system would ensure “a better end-to-end experience for both staff and diners”.
“We are saddened to hear about Deliveroo’s withdrawal from Australia, adding pressure to both the workers and restaurants that relied on their services,” he said.
“Nothing is more important than our people. Our crew who come to work every day, and our guests that dine with us every day.”
“This means we can give our crew more shifts and more hours, and we can better control the experience you have at home when you order with us.”
Thousands of food delivery riders lost their jobs on Wednesday night when the company went into administration.
After the collapse, Transport Matters Party MLC Rod Barton called for immediate reform to the gig economy, otherwise more companies would leave the market.
“There is no safety net in the gig economy,” he said.
