Thousands of Deliveroo employees now without jobs

Deliveroo customers won’t be left hungry, and drivers won’t be left without work, despite the company’s collapse, with Menulog announcing it will step in to help.

The food delivery giant said it wanted help the thousands of Deliveroo customers left high and dry by the collapse, promising to honour unused vouchers, gift cards and account credits.

“We expect there will be a lot of customers with unused Deliveroo vouchers and gift cards, so we would like to give them the opportunity to redeem those vouchers on their next Menulog order,” Morten Belling, Managing Director, Menulog said.

Mr Belling said thousands of customers would be left feeling disappointed, following Deliveroo’s shock decision to enter voluntary administration.

“Menulog will honour valid promotional vouchers, gift cards and account credits,” Mr Belling said.

Deliveroo vouchers and gift cards will be limited to one redemption per customer, up to $75.

Menulog said it would also offer for Deliveroo delivery drivers expedited set up on the Menulog network, with around 15,000 drivers plunged into unemployment following the company’s shock collapse.

“We know there are couriers out there who will be feeling the impact of this,” said Mr Belling.

“We also have opportunities for couriers interested in a position in our employed courier trial in select suburbs of Sydney.”

Fast-food giant Domino also announced it would hire 5000 delivery drivers across Australia in the wake of the collapse.

Domino’s workers are paid among the highest wages in the industry, including late nights, weekends, and public holiday rates as per the Fast-Food Award.

Deliveroo announced its decision to enter its Australian subsidiary into voluntary administration, immediately ceasing operations, due to poor profitability.

In a statement, Deliveroo said it as a highly competitive market in Australia with four global players.

Without major financial investment, Deliveroo said the company could not reach sustainable profits in Australia, prompting the “difficult” decision to cease its local operation.
