New details about an alleged drug trafficking ring police say was helmed by a senior Hells Angels bikie and a prospect have been revealed during a bail hearing for a convicted child sex offender.

Grant McDougall, 53, on Monday applied for bail to return to his home, which police say was used by alleged senior Hells Angel Scott Michael Kristian Smith to store “items” including more than $105,000 worth of meth.

Mr McDougall was allegedly part of an operation that involved an alleged Outlaw Motorcycle Group member and prospect trafficking in large quantities of meth and cocaine.

Detectives allegedly watched Mr Smith attending Mr McDougall’s home to collect a backpack and later Mr Smith took part, with gang prospect Bradley Horlor, in the sale of 1kg of methamphetamine for $105,000.

The court heard Mr Smith and Mr Horlor were allegedly in negotiations with “persons known to police” in discussing the sale of 250kg of meth.

Mr McDougall – who the court heard is a convicted child sex offender – is yet to enter a plea to six counts of drug trafficking.

He was arrested in May alongside Mr Smith, Mr Horlor and two other northern suburbs people after an investigation from October last year.

Mr Smith was granted home detention bail in the sum of $30,000 by the state’s Chief Magistrate in July, which was unaltered by a Supreme Court review.

Mr Horlor was also granted home detention bail in August to support his partner as she was due for a caesarean birth of their second child.

Prosecutors alleged Mr McDougall had given Mr Smith full access to his home to store “items” – but made no mention he knew of any alleged controlled substances.

“A search of (Mr McDougall’s address) was subsequently conducted, locating 1.4kg of methamphetamine and that search also turned up 100 grams of cocaine,” prosecutors alleged.

The court heard Mr McDougall was convicted in 2017 for communicating to make a child amenable for sexual activity.

Mr McDougall’s counsel said his client would dispute knowledge of the illicit substances found at his home and his “involvement” was less than his co-accused.

The court heard he was a night cleaner at the Barossa Novotel alongside his wife and had used all his long-service leave during his time in custody.

Defence also submitted Mr McDougall was needed to be able to assist his wife in the care of his son.

Magistrate Justin Wickens in the Adelaide Magistrates Court ordered a home detention report and indicated to Mr McDougall if it was favourable he would be “minded” to grant bail.

The court previously heard Mr Smith is facing 3 counts of drug trafficking while Mr Horlor is charged with 13 counts of drug trafficking.

The matter returns to court next week.
