New revenue stream for Uber drivers after app update allows customers to tip for good service

Uber customers who want to give extra thanks to their driver for going the extra mile with great service have a new way to do so, thanks to a new feature in the Australian app.

What are your options when it comes to ride-sharing?

Customers with Uber and Uber Eats will be able to tip their drivers from Thursday thanks to a new feature to be unveiled in the Australian app.

Passengers will be able to give as much as $50 to drivers who go the extra mile during their trip, with the same option available for those who deliver food across Melbourne’s suburbs.

Uber Australian head of drivers Lucas Groeneveld said the idea came about after customers asked the company how they could thank workers for good service.

“This could be playing a great song at the right time, lending a hand with a heavy piece of luggage, or delivering food to an apartment up a flight of stairs,” he said.

“Across Australia, millions of 5-star ratings with compliments have been given by riders to outstanding driver-partners in the past year — as well as millions of ‘thumbs up’ ratings have been given to Uber Eats delivery partners.”

Mr Groeneveld said the feature would have preset options of $1, $3 and $5 but customers would also be able to choose their own amount.

“This a small step we’re taking to help riders and eaters celebrate the driver partners and delivery partners who go the extra mile in their own special ways, via an easy and meaningful way to say “cheers” for a job well done,” he said.
