The group, comprising the Casuarina Swimming Club, Darwin Canoe Polo, Darwin Stingers Masters Swimming Club, Darwin Swimming Club, Darwin Triathlon Club, Darwin Water Polo, Masters Swimming NT, Nightcliff Swimming Club, Royal Life Saving Society NT, Swimming NT and Triathlon NT, suggests increasing casual swim fees about 25 per cent.

General hire and water sports association hire fee would fall by about 5 per cent.

“The group proposes that general water hire and water sports association hire ideally would be reduced by 5 per cent (ranging from $0.20 to $6.25) for the 2021/22 financial year,” a letter from the group said.

“(This is) due to the closure of the Casuarina Swimming Pool’s consequences: space/lane/time limitations as three pool’s-worth of swimmers are condensed to two.”

A CPI increase rounded up to the nearest dollar, to take place from the 2022/23 financial year has also been proposed by.

The council proposed an increase to fees for general admission and clubs last year but scrapped the plan because of COVID-19.

The group stated that while they understood the need for pool fees to increase, they needed certainty around how fees may change.

“Without the ability to plan and budget 24-36 months into the future, many stakeholder groups would not be able to continue operating if increases like those proposed in the 2020/21 financial year were implemented at short notice.

“This would rapidly reduce both the number and instances of water sports and activities available to Darwin residents.”
