Gold Coast Light Rail Stage 3B

PALM Beach residents say they are “dismayed” by plans for a “concrete jungle” of towers through their suburb along the future route of the light rail.

Tens of millions of dollars worth of residential towers are set to rise along the future light rail route through central Palm Beach.

Developers have put forward a range of new projects for the suburb this year, with most centred on the expected tram route along the Gold Coast Highway.

Stage 4 is in the planning stages, with community consultation to launch next year on the link, which will run from Burleigh Heads to Coolangatta via Gold Coast Airport.

With the tram’s future solidifying, developers have flocked to the southern suburb, filing plans for towers close to the beachfront and the future tram stops.

But Bulletin readers have reacted with fury, expression fears of a “concrete jungle” in their suburb.

Community Alliance Association president John Hicks said in a letter to the editor that many Palm Beach residents would be “dismayed” by the planned developments.

“The prediction that Palm Beach will end up as a canyon of high/medium rise buildings is coming to pass because of the cumulative effect of overdevelopment approvals,” he said.

“Council must do a better job of managing city growth and urban renewal as our population increases by 50 per cent over the next 20 years. This is a huge transition for the city to navigate.

“Managed properly the Gold Coast can become a leafy, inviting, world class, subtropical city – a gardens by-the-sea outcome.

“Managed poorly and we risk creating an unattractive Gotham by-the-sea outcome. Community Alliance is concerned the latter is the trajectory we are on.”
