These are the best places to eat and drink Highett, according to Flour Child St Kilda’s executive chef Alessandro Bellomunno.
Best place for a coffee and breakfast
The Flour House
With my Italian background, I love a sweet breakfast. The Flour House is an inspiring family business that champions bread on all stages of the journey. The owners mill their own grain for their bread. Pastries are also made in-house: all fluffy, warm, light and melt-in-your-mouth delicious. Take home the fruit loaf.

Best counter meal and beer
Bad Shepherd Brewing Co
Technically this is in Cheltenham, but you’ll find me here for Sunday lunch — especially for the beef brisket. This is a relaxing, comfy space to share a beverage in a family friendly atmosphere. I love the creative range of craft beer, too. It’s one for meat lovers and herbivores alike — with a full vegan menu at the ready. My favourites include the smoker meat combos and chicken wings loaded with homemade sauces. Drink an oatmeal stout or beer tasting paddle.

Where I take the family
The Hellenic House Project
I love eating Greek food with my wife and daughter. We often head here for a chilled family dinner in the downstairs area. We’ll start with a mezze platter, with plenty of feta and pita. The lamb souvlaki loaded with pickled onions and tzatziki is my go-to. While the saganaki and lamb shoulder in the ‘Good Room’ upstairs are worth a look-in.

When I want to be a little fancy
Abbiocco Pasta and Wine
This restaurant is hidden in the corner of Highett train station. It’s one of my favourite places for dinner. I enjoy the atmosphere of a buzzy Italian restaurant with an amazing selection of fresh made pasta. My favourite is the spaghetti alla limone made with fermented lemon oil, camomile and burrata. The food is a modern take on the classics. Save room for the tiramisu, and a coffee to finish.

Where I stock the pantry
Moorabbin Market
There are not any local places for fresh fruit and veg in Highett, so I visit the Moorabbin Market. It has a vast range of fruit, veggies and deli products. You will find all your essential basic pantry items here and more. There is even a great supermarket for continental groceries with Italian products and pasta.
