These are the best places to eat and drink in Kew, according to Pincho Disco head chef Diego Cardenas.
Best place for a coffee and breakfast
Frank & Harri
The cinnamon buns here are delightful. Always freshly baked, perfectly spiced, and just the right amount of sweetness. I always order one with a long black. Frank & Harri’s long blacks are robust and aromatic, and as a combination, it’s a breakfast experience hard to beat in Melbourne.

Best counter meal and beer
Skinny Dog Hotel
My first “parma” at the Skinny Dog Hotel was unforgettable. It was perfectly cooked with a crispy, golden crust, and the layering of ham, cheese, and sauce was just right — not too heavy but full of flavour. If you’re not too hungry, you can order a half-sized portion because it is very large. Add a cold, pale ale, and this is my ideal solo meal, especially when I’m craving something hearty and satisfying.

Where I take the family
Studley Park Boathouse
My family live overseas, but when they visit Melbourne I love to take them to Studley Park Boathouse. They have a great selection of wood-fired pizzas with really fresh ingredients — my favourite is the charred pumpkin with roast red onions. An afternoon by the water with this pizza and a loaded charcuterie plate is the best way to spend time with the family.

Where I stock the pantry, fridge and freezer
Toscano’s
Toscano’s is a chef’s treasure trove. The selection of cheese, charcuterie and wine is unparalleled, with both local and international options. I’m always impressed by the freshness and quality of their fruit and vegetables. Not only do they taste great when I cook at home, but they last longer in the pantry.

When I want to be a little fancy
Sushi On
This is where I go for an exceptional omakase experience. The head chef, JangYong Hyun, with his Korean background, brings a unique touch to very traditional Japanese flavours. You can see his technique is amazing, with each course flawlessly presented. Every visit is truly an experience as the menu changes to feature the best seasonal ingredients. I think this is the best omakase experience in Melbourne.
