Delicious.100: Best family-friendly restaurants in Victoria

Eating out with kids is it’s own special dining experience, but it’s no reason to eat tasteless food from an RSL just because they have a kids menu. Here are the top tastiest family-friendly restaurants in Victoria.

LEONARDO’S PIZZA PALACE

Serving pizzas until 1am, this is a hospo hot spot for knock-offs but earlier in the day, loaded fries and crumbed chicken tenders and mozzarella sticks with pizza sauce, as well as Leonardo’s monster American-style pizzas – that come with a side of ranch sauce for dipping the crusts in – keeps all ages happy.

PARK STREET PASTA

Whether it’s al dente casarecce jostling in a hefty beef short rib, or sage butter-drenched agnolotti pillows of veal and rabbit, Park Street Pasta shows other neighbourhood locals – as well as more famous pasta bars – just how it’s done.

South Melbourne’s quaint corner Victorian building is cosy and welcoming; there’s a fireplace crackling in the front room, plenty of cosy nooks to settle in with a glass of red and a vibe that’s take-a-seat-at-the-family-table inviting.

THE BATHS MIDDLE BRIGHTON

Great views, fab food and decent value might be hospitality’s elusive triple threat, but the upstairs restaurant at The Baths Middle Brighton makes good on all fronts.

Seared scallops with prosciutto, and classic beer-battered fish and chips fly the flag for comfort as well as value compared with other eateries along the St Kilda to Brighton stretch of sand.

A smart-casual approach somewhere between board shorts and fine dining gives a sense of occasion without the fuss, and a good kids’ menu makes family dining here an easy win, as do wines priced for celebrating or just drinking in the view.

MUSE AT MITCHELTON

Under the shadow of the iconic Robin Boyd-designed tower, Muse, Mitchelton Winery’s signature restaurant, nails its modern farmhouse brief within a Scandi-handsome dining room that boasts roaring open fire for winter and expansive vine-covered terrace come summer.

Perfect for a long, lazy Sunday lunch with the extended family, the dedicated kids’ menu - including crumbed barra with carrots and chips; roasted chicken with pumpkin and peas - is executed with a similar produce-first philosophy.

THE INDEPENDENT

Gembrook’s The Independent provides many good reasons to eat your veggies. Flame-licked broccoli decorated with creamy piped avocado, iceberg lettuce pimped-out with mustard and shaved American cheddar, and smoked carrots drizzled in sticky maple bring the wow-factor to plant-based cooking.

But don’t worry, there’s plenty for the carnivores too.

Ideal for relaxed Sunday dining with the kids, there’s great value in two set menus, which are also available with drinks.

A glass of something tasty paired with friendly service – and that broccoli – provides every good reason to head for the hills.
