Some come for the sculpture. Others don’t get past the cellar door and pizza oven. That’s a shame because Montalto’s restaurant is the hero of this renowned Red Hill estate.

Seventeen years young, the big, rustic dining room — with bucolic vineyard views — is humming with creative energy and managed by a cracking front-of-house crew.

CAPTAIN MOONLITE

Who knew a little-loved fish could beat the view from the Anglesea Surf Club’s dining room in the spectacular stakes?

But there they are, a half dozen whole sardines fresh from Port Phillip and straight into the pan, nowt but a dusting of flour to help them to crunchy perfection. Teamed with the sweet earthiness of beetroots in yoghurt with a hit of horseradish heat, it’s surf and turf for a new generation.

Despite their best efforts, service is more sweet than sharp so expect to wait, but who’s in a rush when there’s that view to drink in?

POLPERRO

The winding path that leads to Polperro Winery’s restaurant is fringed with spotted gums but the herb and vegetable garden, near the front door, sends the strongest signal that to eat here is to eat locally.

PARINGA ESTATE

Lindsay McCall’s Mornington Peninsula winery, Paringa, is one of the area’s loveliest little rooms and enjoys one of best vineyard views across three-decade-old pinot and chardonnay vines.

Simply set tables allow a blank canvas for the set courses that come from chef Simon Tarlington.

THE BATHS MIDDLE BRIGHTON

Great views, fab food and decent value might be hospitality’s elusive triple threat, but the upstairs restaurant at The Baths Middle Brighton makes good on all fronts.

Its glass elevation takes in those unimpeded bay and city views, and with a new chef installed, menu tweaks have enlivened the seafood-skewed mod Oz menu that’s full of Euro technique.

Unashamedly pitched at the pointiest end of Melbourne dining, Sun Kitchen is the new Sichuan/Cantonese rebrand of what was Albert Park’s fancy fine diner, The Point.

The wine cellar is built for Black Amexes in the market for big, showy gestures, while the view across the lake remains as glorious as ever.

HOGGET KITCHEN

If Paynesville’s Sardine serves Gippsland’s (actually, Victoria’s) best seafood, then Hogget Kitchen has the paddocks covered.

Service can tend towards a lazy Sunday vibe and the dining room is a tad tired, but that lamb, a spectacular local wine list and views of vines with a backdrop of West Gippsland’s rolling hills more than evens the ledger.
