Two men have been charged following a brutal gang attack on police in Melbourne’s west on Tuesday.
Up to 50 rowdy youth descended on Long Tree Drive in Harkness about 5pm in breach of the Chief Health Officer’s ban on social gatherings.
Alarmed witnesses called police, who attempted to break-up the group and send them home, but were allegedly set upon by up to 10 youngsters.
A police spokesman said one officer was punched twice to the back of the head and two members were treated for injuries.
A 17-year-old was charged with affray and assault police and was remanded in custody to face a Children’s Court on Wednesday.
A 23-year-old Brookfield man was also charged with assault police and affray and was bailed to appear at court at a later date.
Three others including a 17-year-old Kurunjang teen, a 25-year-old Harkness woman and an 18-year-old Brookfield man were released and expected to be charged on summons with hinder police and breaching the Chief Health Officer’s directives.
