Cannabis grow house discovered in Werribee after ‘significant’ blaze

A cannabis grow house was discovered ablaze in Melbourne’s west after emergency services rushed to a house fire on Wednesday.

A house fire in Melbourne's west uncovered a cannabis grow house as firefighters battling the blaze discovered a hydroponic set up.

Emergency services rushed to the scene on Sittella Court in Werribee about 6am on Monday morning after a triple-0 caller reported smoke rising from the single-story dwelling.

Almost 30 units responded to the blaze, arriving to discover the rear of the property was “well involved in fire”, according to a Fire Rescue Victoria spokesman.

“Firefighters wearing breathing apparatus entered the house and aggressively attacked the fire,” he said.

The fire was quickly brought under control but rear rooms of the property suffered “significant” damage.

At the scene, police discovered what is believed to be a cannabis hydroponic growing operation in the property and quickly set up a crime scene.

A neighbour, who asked not to be named, said she watched police carry “a few large bags” from the property.

“I never thought there was anything odd about the place,” she said.

A Victoria Police spokeswoman say the cause of the blaze has not been determined, asking anyone with information to contact Crime Stoppers.
