Victorians will spend more on Halloween than anywhere else in the nation, with $170m set to fill the tills of retailers.
According to research commissioned by the Australian Retailers Association, $450m will be injected into the national economy in spooktacular spending.
“This $450m sugar-hit will be greatly appreciated by retailers who continue to face challenging economic conditions,” ARA chief executive Paul Zahra said.
“Food, clothing, home and cosmetic retailers will be eagerly anticipating an uptick during the lead-up to Halloween.”
One in every five Australians is expected to celebrate on October 31, with an average spend of more than $90.
However, the cost of living crisis is hitting the haunted holiday, with spending projections down about $40m nationally compared to 2023.
The Costumery store owner Bianca Faye said she had already seen an increase in hires, with Trump outfits some of the most popular.
“Trump wigs, Trump masks, orange face paint — he’s an easy target — Melbourne loves to dress as Trump,” she said.
For Brighton East’s Leigh Phelan, preparations for decorating the house started five months ago, with his family getting together to brainstorm ideas to ensure they had the spookiest house on the street.
The tradition began out of boredom in Covid but has evolved into more than 500 people trick-or-treating at their home last year.
This year, the family wants to draw even larger crowds, with the home featuring a giant spider, a light-up pumpkin man and a huge skeleton swinging on gallows.
The Herald Sun will be compiling a map of the spookiest houses.
