A-League: Construction to begin on Wyndham Stadium training facility

An “important step” has been made in the development of Western United’s new A-League home. Here’s what’s happened.

Construction on Western United’s permanent A-League home is soon to get underway.

On Tuesday night, Wyndham City Council approved the development plan for the regional football facility in Tarneit.

The facility, which is the first step in the Wyndham Stadium project, will see three soccer pitches constructed and a grandstand for 5000 spectators.

It’s expected Western United will use the main and training turf pitches for most of the year except for during the off-season between May and July.

The third pitch proposed for the site is to be a synthetic turf field located in the southern end of the site.

Once completed, the Wyndham City Stadium will become the home groundfor A-League team Western United FC.

A 15,000 seat stadium is set to be part of the final development.

“This is an important step forward in the process of constructing a unique, state-of-the-art sports facility in Wyndham,” Wyndham City mayor Peter Maynard said.

“We can now get on with the job of building the training facilities that will be adjacent to the main stadium.

“Large projects such as this are significant for a city like Wyndham. As we continue our Covid recovery, we’re working hard to ensure our local economy bounces back and this project will provide jobs and create a fantastic new community asset.”

An economic impact assessment of the stadium development said it will provide 835 jobs during construction and 125 ongoing permanent roles once it is completed.

“We anticipate that when complete, the Wyndham Stadium development will attract about five million visitors over 20 years, generating non-stadium visitor spending and supporting local business, including those in Riverdale Town Centre,” Mr Maynard said.

As part of the first stage of development, a two-storey building will be constructed housing training and gym facilities, function and media spaces along with change rooms, kiosks and public toilets.

The third pitch will be a synthetic turf field.

Construction is expected to be completed by May 2023.
