A former Warrnambool groundskeeper has been jailed after two brutal attacks on a 60-year-old woman who thought she was on the brink of death.
Jason Stokes, 32, was sentenced to jail in the County Court on Friday morning after pleading to assault and two counts of intentionally causing injury.
On the first occasion, Stokes became enraged over an imitation tattoo on the 60-year-old woman’s arm.
He repeatedly punched the woman, causing a fractured finger.
Days later, Stokes came home intoxicated and flew into another rage, pinning the woman down on a bed and repeatedly hitting her, causing the woman to choke on her own dentures.
He also savagely bit her forehead and threatened to kill her during the attack.
The attack lasted for five to ten minutes before other people intervened.
Stokes also told the woman to lie to hospital staff about how she got her injuries, which included a fractured finger, two black eyes, severe bruising and a large gash on her forehead.
In her victim impact statement, the woman described the horrific impact the attack had on her.
“I was sure I was going to die,” the statement read.
“I do not feel like I can trust anyone.”
Judge Micheal O’Connoll said Stokes showed “callous indifference” to his victim during the attacks and has shown little remorse.
Stokes was convicted and sentenced to three years and three months in jail, with a non parole period of two years.
He has already served 165 days in custody.
