Warrnambool’s popular three-day racing carnival has returned this week, with more than 30,000 punters making their way to the track.
Punters from across Australia have this week flocked to the fields eager to watch flat racing, jumps racing and the internationally acclaimed Grand Annual Steeplechase, first held in 1872.
It remains the longest and most celebrated race of its kind in Australia.
The Warrnambool May Racing Carnival is hosted from Tuesday to Thursday and the Warrnambool News attended on Wednesday to capture all of the action.
Warrnambool Racing Club marketing and sponsorships manager Luke Aggett expected more than 30,000 racegoers to attend the carnival.
The Warrnambool carnival is one of the only country racing events that runs over a three-day period.
“We’re excited to have a big carnival — it’s well-known and well-loved. Three days is a lot of fun, you don’t really get that anywhere else in racing,” Mr Aggett said earlier this year.
The majority of accommodation in Warrnambool was booked out months in the lead up to the large event, where some motels that had vacancy charged over $1000 for the three-night stay.
Racegoers got creative and put on their stylish, colourful outfits in preparation to shine at Warrnambool’s most beloved carnival across the week.
