Racing royalty set to attend the Warrnambool May Racing Carnival

Some of the biggest names in the horse racing world will attend Warrnambool’s highly anticipated racing carnival. See the list.

Waterhouse praises 'strong' Inglis Premier Sale

Some of the biggest names in the horse racing world will be attending the TAB Warrnambool May Racing Carnival.

Celebrating its 150th year, the event is expected to attract 10,000 racegoers over the three-day event.

Inducted in the Australian racing hall of fame in 2007, famous Australian horse trainer Gai Waterhouse is just one of the names set to grace the Warrnambool racecourse.

With 30 years experience in horse training, Waterhouse was the first Australian female trainer to win the Melbourne Cup with Fiorente in 2013.

She holds the title for the most Golden Slipper Stake wins with her seventh in 2020 overtaking her father Tommy J Smith’s record of six wins.

Waterhouse has trained more than 100 group one race winners, and is considered one of Australia’s greatest trainers.

She will have horses competing in five races at the Warrnambool Carnival, including Prince of Rome and Hush Writer.

Jumps jockey turned trainer with south west Victorian roots, Ciaron Maher will also be in attendance.

Growing up on a farm in Winslow outside of Warrnambool, Maher is known for buying and training horses who have gone on to win in jump racing, including the Brierley, National Steeplechase and the Grand Annual.

Early in his career, Maher represented Australia in the International Jockey Challenge.

Turning to horse training, Maher who co-trains with David Eustace now has 24 group one winnings, including three time winner Jameka and dual winner Merchant navy.

Maher and Eustace will have horses competing in 18 races.

Australian thoroughbred jockey Hugh Bowman has ridden more than 2000 racing winners in his career, including 100 group 1 wins, and was inducted in the Australian Racing Hall of Fame in 2019.

Some of Bowman’s most famous wins include riding Winx who went on the win 33 times, 25 of them being group one level.

Bowman has ridden four horses winning the NSW Metropolitan Jockey Premiership.

Bowman will be riding in 10 races across the three-day event.

Successful jumps jockey and trainer Steven Pateman will be in Warrnambool this week.

Pateman has ridden more than 350 jumps winners over his 17-year career, and is now the owner and trainer at Pateman Racing in Barwon Heads.

Pateman will have his horse Historic racing with rider Darryl Horner at the May races on Tuesday in the George Taylor Memorial Maiden Hurdle, 3200m.

Jockey Jamie Kah has more than 1000 winnings under her belt, including six group one wins.

Kah will be riding multiple horses in the Warrnambool May Carnival jumps races, with a total of 12 races she will be competing in.

The May Racing Carnival Fashions on the Fields co-MC Casey Bruce will be in attendance, who has a prominent history as a jockey with 250 total wins.

With her last race in 2018, Bruce is now an equine commentator and MC host for horse racing events.
