5. RARE EARTH HAIR, PRAHRAN
184 Commercial Rd
The stylists at Rare Earth Hair come from around the world, which broadens the salon’s horizons, manager Jade Roworth says.
“I think it’s great because you learn things when you move here, but you also bring with you new things, and that meshes well with our team,” the UK native says.
The close-knit group of six have strong bonds with their customers, built over many hours in the salon chair.
Roworth even went to one customer’s wedding as a friend — after doing her bridal hair, of course.
“I’d say all the time, a lot of us communicate quite personally with clients,” she says.
The “super super relaxed” salon has been named not only one of the best salons in the south, but also one of Melbourne’s top 10.
“It’s obviously incredible, it’s a great honour so we’re super happy about that. It’s come as a bit of a shock,” Roworth says of their nomination.

4. ZENITY HAIR SALON, CRANBOURNE EAST
42 Bradford Drive
Zenity Hair’s Amy Doyle might insist she’s “just a mum” running a home salon, but now she’s a mum who is also one of the top stylists in Melbourne’s south.
Not only that, she’s also been named one of Melbourne’s top 10 hairdressers.
Dubbed the “queen of colour” by her clients, Doyle loves rainbow work, and the incredible artistry which adorns her social media accounts will brighten your day.
She has been hairdressing for 20 years, and started Zenity out of her garage eight years ago in between “popping out babies”.
She and her “amazing, supportive husband” Tye have three children: Charlie, 12, Max, 8 and Indie, 7.
“What am I supposed to say — that’s crazy,” she laughs when told of her nomination.
“I’m blown away — I’ll be crying.”

3. LISSARA HAIR BOUTIQUE, DROMANA
3/277 Point Nepean Rd
Melissa Kuster says her own battles with self-confidence over the years have driven her to make her clients feel their best.
“I just like to make people feel nice about themselves and give them some confidence,” Kuster says.
“You can just change someone’s whole day by making them feel nice.
“I like having that personal touch with my clients. People have gone through break-ups and divorces and they’re crying in the salon.”
The Lissara Hair Boutique’s dedication has paid off, with her salon being named one of the best in the south — as well as one of Melbourne’s top 10.
Her win is extra special, as she was taken away from her salon months after it opened when her newborn son Max needed open-heart surgery.
“This means a lot more to me, to know that my staff still did a great job while I was off,” Kuster says.
The bub is now thriving and a regular visitor to the salon along with big sister Lexi, three.

2. HAIRMOVES, FRANKSTON
67 Wells St
When Mauritian native Deen Mos started his salon in Frankston 16 years ago, his clients told him he was too cool for the suburbs.
“When I first opened people would say to me ‘you shouldn’t be here, you should be in the city’, but I said ‘I want my Frankston clients to have luxury’,” Mos laughs.
The stylist loves fashion and Melbourne’s “trendiness” and multiculturalism, which caught his attention when he saw TV ads as a teenager.
He made the move to Australia after learning his craft with his dad and brother, starting Hairmoves in 2002 and opening a second salon in Chelsea last year.
He loves pampering his clients and said he would likely cry if his nomination as Melbourne’s best came to fruition — which it has done, landing him among the city’s best snippers as well as the top southern suburbs stylists.
“Because it’s been 15 years of hard work.”

1. CAPELLI É BELLEZZA, FRANKSTON
53c Beach St
It’s all relative for Michelle, Maxi and Tayla Dottori.
The mother-daughter trio spend every day together in their dream salon Capelli é Bellezza — Italian for hair and beauty — and they wouldn’t have it any other way.
Their passion has seen them take out the crown of the best hairdresser in Melbourne’s south — as well as landing them in the list of Melbourne’s 10 best hairdressers.
“Even though it’s my mum and my sister, they’re more like my best friends rather than my family. All three of our minds are the exact same — we work so well together,” Maxi Dottori says.
The women, who are all blondes who specialise in the hue, want their salon to feel like their clients are “walking into our home”.
They say they are “always growing, always educating”.
“I think we just do things a little bit differently. I think a lot of people don’t do that — it’s all about the money to them. I’d work for free if I could,” Dottori says.
