IN-FORM all-rounder Sunam Gautam is primed to take the inaugural Super Slam by storm, says Greenvale Kangaroos coach Matthew Love.

Gautam is enjoying a career-best Premier Cricket season, compiling his maiden hundred in Round 5 against Prahran and half-centuries against Melbourne Uni and Northcote.

The 29-year-old headlines the list of local players in the Greenvale squad for the Twenty20 tournament, joined by teammates including paceman Will Sheffield, keeper Bernard Kelly, skipper Kyle Adams and opening batsman Love.

“Twenty20 cricket, he’s born for this,” Love said of Gautam.

“His form in all formats this year has been outstanding and like I said to him at the start of the season, he’s someone that can be a premier player of the competition.
“Not just within our own team. He’s been outstanding and not just (with) bat and ball.

“He’s one of the better fielders you’ll see going around in the competition as well.

“He brings a lot to the table and with the fast pace of T20, he’s really well suited.”

Anthony Barton and Zaheer Hussain are the other First XI players named in the Roos’ squad, which features Melbourne Renegades batsman Beau Webster and ex-Victorian quick Ryan Sidebottom.

Western Australian quick Simon Branston, experienced Brighton batsman Ricky Damiano, Scotsman Andy Umeed and Essendon’s Justin Galeotti are other players who have been drafted into Greenvale’s team.

“The idea of bringing in a few new players is for one, the facilities, to show them off, and ultimately it’s to showcase the club itself and try and get us turning heads,” Love said. “Seeing we are a club that can be a really good destination club for any aspiring cricketers that want to join us in the future.

“Success is high on the priorities and what we will be striving for.”

The Roos have been grouped in the Renegades conference with Melbourne, St Kilda, Prahran, Essendon, Geelong, Footscray, Melbourne University and Carlton.

“All you need to do is get on a bit of a roll and with Twenty20 cricket being a big fixture at the moment, we’re working really hard to be successful,” Love said.

Greenvale opens the tournament with two fixtures on Sunday, taking on Fitzroy Doncaster at 9am and Geelong at 4pm at Princes Park.
