Player profiles: Victorian U17 state cricketers

The Victorian U17 state cricket teams have been announced and Leader Cricket has unveiled a player profile of everyone named in the metro and country squads.

Cricket Victoria have announced its 14-player Metro and Country U17 squads for the upcoming national championships in Hobart on January 2023.

The underage state teams will take part in the tournament from January 16 to 23.

Ahead of the exciting event, Leader Cricket has produced a player profile of everyone named in the squads.

VICTORIA METRO UNDER 17s BOYS SQUAD

Lucas Brasher, Carlton

Role: Spinner

A left arm leg spinner who turns the ball big and likes to put revs on the ball. Has good potential as a bottom age under 17 selected player. He had a setback during preseason with a training mishap that resulted in a broken arm to his non-bowling arm luckily.

Harry Demattia, Melbourne

Role: Batting all-rounder

A highly rated player who was also selected to play in the Victoria Metro under 19 team. Demattia is one of a few under 17 players who are taking the field in the firsts in Victorian premier cricket this season. A top order batter who also bowls right-arm medium pace.

Archie Flynn, Ringwood

Role: Batter

Son of Sean Flynn, the coach of premier cricket club Ringwood. Archie’s older brother Harry was selected in the Victorian under 19 state team. Archie has been selected as bottom age player in the under 17s team. A left hand opening batter who is technically sound and likes to back himself. Has the ability to score all around the ground and has a good temperament.

Christian Howe, Melbourne

Role: All-rounder

A highly rated cricketer who plays AGSV cricket with Mentone Grammar on top of premier cricket with Melbourne. A left arm fast medium bowler who will bowl with the new ball and bat in the top five in the upcoming national championships in Hobart. A genuine all-rounder who bats left handed and is strong leader.

Zac Mills, Northcote

Role: Bowler

A left arm fast medium bowler who has been really good in the trial games bowling either through the middle and at the death. Targets the stumps and is quicker than what batters think. Has good variations with his bowling.

Aayan Nadeem, Footscray

Role: Bowling all-rounder

Aayan is a bottom age player who made it in the side. His older brother Aiman was a top age player who also trialed for the same team and was “really unlucky” to miss out on selection according to a strong source. Aiman impressively responded to the news in no better fashion by scoring 102 last weekend against Frankston Peninsula in the thirds, just days after the teams were announced. Aayan who was selected is a bowling all-rounder who bowls left arm fast. He can bowl a lightning bouncer and has the ability to bowl through all phases of the game. With the bat, he is an attacking left hander who can hit boundaries.

Joshua Pace, Footscray

Role: Batting all-rounder

A left-hand top four batter who has a classic technique. A tall player who has long levers and can drive the ball well and sweep. He also bowl right-arm off spin.

Muhammed Rafay, Footscray

Role: Bowler

A new ball bowler who can shape it away from a right hander. Is tall and has a repeatable action.

Vishwa Ramkumar, Ringwood

Role: Spinner

Is one of the few at under 17 level to have played first grade premier cricket. Ramkumar is a fast leg spinner who targets the stumps and gets a lot of bowled and LBW dismissals.

Aryan Sharma, Fitzroy Doncaster

Role: Batter

A middle order bat who hits the ball pretty hard. Has good footwork and has really nice wrists which enable him to score right all around the ground. He has played the first couple of games in Fitzroy’s first grade side.

Jamie Shepherd, Carlton

Role: Wicketkeeper

Plays in the APS cricket competition with Carey Grammar on top of Victorian premier cricket. Tidy gloveman who is able to bat at a run-a-ball and finish off an innings well.

Bailey Toseland, Essendon

Role: All-rounder

A leg spinning all-rounder who has impressed with the bat in trial games. He has not gone out in trial games in the times he has come in to finish an innings or chase down a score.

Alex Turner, Prahran

Role: Batting all-rounder

A top-order batter who has a mature head on his shoulders. A strong technique and is able to read the game and adjust his tempo to suit the game. He can also bowl handy off spin.

Will Waters, Northcote

Role: Spinner

Impressed with his leg spin in trial games. He is willing to flight the ball and spin it. An exciting player who also has a good arm in the field.

VICTORIA COUNTRY UNDER 17s BOYS SQUAD

Lucas Cavigan, Essendon

Role: Batter

A top order batter with a sound technique and a really good temperament. He made a century for Assumption in the AGSV cricket competition. Cavigan comes from the Central Highlands country region. Also a handy fielder who is versatile with his ability to be in the ring or on the boundary.

Henry Edwards, Carlton

Role: Spinner

A leg spinner from Bendigo who can get the ball above the eye line and spin it which gets him wickets. He can bounce back after being hit as well.

Jarvis Harvey, Carlton

Role: Bowler

A fast bowler from Gippsland who is powerful and strong. He can bowl fast and swing the ball away from the right hand batter.

Harry Hoekstra, Casey South Melbourne

Role: Bowler

Tall left arm fast bowler who can swing the ball in to a right hand batter. Can also bowl at the death with his slower balls and yorkers. The Gippsland is set to get the new ball is his hands in the under 17s tournament in Hobart.

Samuel Lalor, Northcote

Role: Batting all-rounder

The biggest hitter of any under 17 cricketer in the state. Lalor belted them in the trial games this year highlighted by an 80 off 30 odd balls in one of the matches. A left hand bat from Bacchus Marsh who is an athletic mover in the field and can also bowl right arm mediums. Also a talented footballer who was named in the Under 16s All-Australian team this year.

Archie Lalor, Northcote

Role: Bowler all-rounder

The younger brother of Jack and Dan who also play at Northcote. Archie, from Bacchus Marsh is a fast medium bowler who is tall and gains bounce from a high releases point. He also bats in the middle order and hits the ball cleanly.

Kyle Parrott, Melbourne

Role: All-rounder

Parrott can bat anywhere and likes to take the game. He is a crafty off spinner who will be used throughout the tournament. Also good fielder with his ability to read the game well, catch the ball cleanly and throw accurately.

Oliver Peake, Geelong

Role: Batter

A highly talented batter from Geelong who is still bottom age under 17s. Peake was also selected in the Victorian under 19 country side. He is a left hander who can smash the ball through the off side. Played mostly seconds at Geelong last year and could be in line for more cricket in the firsts when he is available outside of APS school cricket commitments with Geelong Grammar. A freak talent who is one to watch. He is also a good fielder with his ability to read the game well, move fast around the ground and throw accurately. He is the son of Clinton Peake, a former first-class Australian cricketer.

Brodie Reaper, Melbourne

Role: Batting all-rounder

A compact left hand bat from Bendigo who is also a good fielder with his ability to read the game well, move fast around the ground and throw accurately. He also bowls left arm orthodox spin.

Abhilasha Rodrigo, East Ballarat

Role: Spinner

An off-spinner from East Ballarat who is consistent and doesn’t miss his line or length too often. He targets the stumps and varies his pace well. A crafty spinner who is a promising talent.

Eddy Schultheis, St Kilda

Role: Bowling all-rounder

A fast medium pace bowler from the Mallee Murray region who can also bat. He bowls a consistent line and length that hits the top of the stumps.

Kane Scott, Prahran

Role: Wicketkeeper

The keeper of the team who has been solid throughout the trials with the gloves. He is an attacking batter who can bat in the top four or middle order. Scott is also a strong leader who comes from the north east country region.

Harry Wallace, Frankston Peninsula

Role: Bowling all-rounder

The son of Cameron Wallace, the Frankston Peninsula president. He bowls medium pace and has the ability to swing it both ways. Has good variations and tricks which makes him a handy option at the death as well. With the bat, he is able to manipulate the field and play the situation of the game well. A savvy cricketer.

Connor Weidemann, Melbourne

Role: All-rounder

Weidemann is a tall medium pacer from Western Waves who can also bat. A genuine all-rounder who will play a role bowling through the middle overs and coming in with the stick in the middle to lower order.
