APS cricket round 7: Samuel Mazza hits St Kevin’s highest ever individual score

Despite a round which featured draws for the majority of matches due to extreme heat delays, some exceptional APS cricket was on show with a record breaking ton leading the way.

St Kevin’s batting all-rounder Samuel Mazza launched a blistering century of 186 featuring 30 boundaries to set the record for the highest individual score of a batter from the school.

It was described as “one of the best innings ever seen at the level” in a St Kevin’s tweet.

Mazza’s feat also surpassed Mitchell Kirkwood-Scott’s 166 for the highest score of the season.

ST KEVIN’S defeated CAULFIELD

It was a rollercoaster day for St Kevin’s as Samuel Mazza broke the school record for the highest individual score to set his side up for victory before Caulfield’s Jez Rigoni fired back with an unbeaten 119 to win the match, chasing down the total 5d-275.

Mazza’s knock of 186 was filled with class as the cool change came through following a delay to the start of the game.

The St Kevin’s number three hit a stunning 30 boundaries featuring 10 sixes in his feat to set the highest individual score by a batter from the school with 186.

But it was Caulfield who took home the win with number four Rigoni notching an impressive unbeaten century of 119 to get his side over the line.

It was a classy knock with the youngster thriving under pressure as he successfully chased down the final 22 runs needed alongside Rory Wright (24*) when only two wickets were in hand with minimal overs remaining in the nail biter.

Caulfield came away victorious for their third win of the season.

GEELONG GRAMMAR defeated by GEELONG COLLEGE

It was a win to remember for Geelong College who powered home over cross-town rivals Geelong Grammar to win by two wickets in a thrilling contest at the Main Oval in Corio.

The win marked Geelong College’s first for the season while Geelong Grammar suffered its first loss of the campaign.

Despite a valiant effort from Geelong Grammar’s Ollie Peake to notch his second APS ton of the season, Geelong College were able to power home with Max Franklin (3-28 off 15.3) and Ted Bain (91 off 180) starring.

Franklin picked up the key wicket of Geelong Grammar’s opener and captained Henry Melville to begin proceedings strongly before claiming number five Samuel Lalor for 66 runs and number six Jack Headon.

Geelong Grammar were held to a respectable total of 10-238.

Then Geelong College’s Bain took the spotlight in the run chase, top scoring for his team with 91 from 180 deliveries to put his side in a strong position for victory at 7-215 when he was dismissed.

Luke Cannard and Jimmy Adams then sealed the win for College with 12 not out each to get the runs with two wickets left in the shed in a tense finish.

HAILEYBURY drew to SCOTCH

After Haileybury set a respectable total of 9d-252, they were in a close contest as Scotch were 5-143 in the run chase before play ended in a draw.

Scotch’s Ed Winneke was the top batter for the match, scoring 62 from 101 deliveries while Scotch’s Harry Jones was the best bowler for the game with figures of 3-43 from 16 overs.

MELBOURNE GRAMMAR drew to XAVIER

After Melbourne Grammar’s Oliver Will blasted a stunning century of 127 from 150 deliveries to get his side to 3d-286, the game looked set for a close finish although play ended in a draw with Xavier score at 5-190.

Will’s ton featured 18 boundaries including a six while teammate Angus Whitehead also impressed with 76.

Patrick Forrest scored 56 for Xavier with the bat in the run chase.

BRIGHTON drew to WESLEY

Brighton survived a draw in a tense finish on their home turf against Wesley.

It was Brighton’s Jeremy Murray and Nicholas Robertson who faced 121 balls to restrict Wesley from taking the final two wickets to win the game.

Will Scott was impressive with the ball for Wesley taking 3-15 off 11 overs.

Earlier in the day, Murray was superb with the ball, taking 4-29 off 20 overs, featuring 10 maidens as Wesley were restricted to 10-161.

In the run chase Brighton ended up hanging on for a draw with scores finishing at 8-121.
