Low totals, wickets and gutsy centuries were the feature of round 5 of the APS cricket season.
Two-day cricket returned but it was an usually wet January weekend which forced one game to be called off while a number of other games were played in overcast conditions.
Geelong Grammar pulled off the most convincing win while Xavier College and St Kevin’s played out a draw in a nail biting finish alongside Carey and Caulfield.
ST KEVINS drew with XAVIER
In the first innings, St Kevin’s looked to be on top on their home deck as they picked up early wickets.
But Xavier’s number four Patrick Forrest (61) and number eight Henry Lasscock (53) brought their side back into the game with half centuries lifting their side to a solid total of 8-237 after 76 overs.
Daniel DeGuara (3-52 off 20 overs) and Hamish Cooper (3-26 off 8.1 overs) were the standout bowlers for St Kevin’s with three wickets each.
In the run chase, St Kevin’s number again looked in control of the game as they got off to a good start with the bat.
Number three Samuel Mazza was the star, top scoring with 83 off 124 balls while his teammate Liam McCashin also contributed with a handy 61, batting at number four.
But when the third wicket of Mazza fell at 3-134, the game suddenly changed with Xavier taking 5-25 to leave St Kevin’s at 7-159.

St Kevin’s Jack Morice and Billy Macmillan ended up holding on for the last wicket partnership to save the game for a draw with scores ending at 9-193.
Simon Greene was the standout with the ball for Xavier, claiming 3-23 off 12 overs.
CAREY drew with CAULFIELD

Home side Carey managed to hold on for a draw at 9-87.
Caulfield’s number four Thomas Wrigglesworth top scored with a handy century of 105 while Jez Rigoni contributed with 79.

In testing overcast conditions favourable for the bowlers, the pair put together two memorable knocks.
Carey’s leading wicket taker for the game was James Sharrock who snared 4-23.
In the run chase, it quickly became about survival for Carey after they lost 6-51.
Caulfield skipper Zac Coplestone was the standout bowler taking 3-17 from 10 overs.
GEELONG GRAMMAR defeated WESLEY
Geelong Grammar opening bowler Ned Cole led the way with the ball for the home side, taking 3-27 off 18.2 overs to help dismiss Wesley for a total of 170.
With the bat, recently announced under-17 national championships team of the tournament member Ollie Peake was class, scoring an unbeaten 106 from 143 deliveries to ease his side over the line in a nine wicket victory.
Peake hit 12 fours in his century while Charlie Calvert knocked an unbeaten 66 at the other end.
