Jack Gunston, James Pattinson among Haileybury College’s best sporting stars

From exciting prospects to accomplished AFL stars, Haileybury College has produced many renowned sporting athletes. See the list.

A number of sporting stars have emerged from Haileybury College in its 131 year history.

Many AFL players nurtured their football at the school before moving into professional careers.

Andrew Brayshaw and Jack Gunston are two modern footballers who have had successful careers after playing at the school.

Another high performer has been F1 driver Oscar Piastri who has already made big strides in the sport at age 21.

Impressively, in the 1970s, Robert Rose went on to have a career in first-class cricket and in the VFL. It is something that rarely happens these days.

There have been many athletes from other sports who have also come out of the school.

Here’s a look at the best sporting stars to emerge from Haileybury College identified by Leader Sport.

Karl Amon (AFL)

The midfielder has played 124 games for Port Adelaide since he joined the club in season 2014. The 27-year-old will play for Hawthorn this season.

Warren Ayres (Cricket)

A star of Victorian cricket, Warren Ayres holds the record for the most runs in the state’s premier cricket competition with 15,277 runs. Ayres also played 46 first-class matches for Victoria between 1988 and 1997. He played 25 seasons of premier cricket, 19 with Melbourne and six with Dandenong.

Alice Burke (AFLW)

An emerging AFLW player who has played 13 games for St Kilda since being drafted with a father-daughter selection in the 2021 draft. Her father Nathan Burke played 323 games for St Kilda and is the current coach of the Western Bulldogs AFLW team.

Andrew Brayshaw (AFL)

Since being drafted to Fremantle with pick 2 in the 2017 national draft, Andrew Brayshaw has played 100 games for the club. The 23-year-old won the Leigh Matthews medal for the most valuable player in the league last season. He also made it into the All-Australian team and won his club’s best and fairest award in 2022.

Angus Brayshaw (AFL)

A premiership player with Melbourne in 2021, Angus Brayshaw has played 143 games for the club since 2015. He featured in the league’s best 22 under 22 players in 2018.

Tory Dickson (AFL)

An AFL premiership player in 2016, Tory Dickson played 114 games for the Western Bulldogs between 2012 and 2020 in his AFL career. He is also known for being a talented golfer playing off a single-figure handicap.

Isabella Eddey (AFLW)

Drafted to North Melbourne with pick 13 in the 2020 AFLW draft, Isabella Eddey has played 21 games for the club since joining.

Jack Gunston (AFL)

Since 2010, Jack Gunston has played 225 AFL games and currently he plays for the Brisbane Lions. He won three premierships with Hawthorn from 2013 to 2015. He was the Hawks leading goalkicker in 2015, 2016 and 2020. He made it into the All-Australia team in 2018 and won a Hawks best and fairest in 2020.

Gerry Hazlitt (Cricket)

The parent and friends support group Haileybury Cricket has been named after Gerry Hazlitt. He played nine test matches for Australia and 57 first-class games. He took 7-25 in one test match and finished with his 23 test wickets bowling right-arm off spin.

Jon Holland (Cricket)

Since season 2008-09, Jon Holland has played 91 first-class matches, 57 list A games, four test matches for Australia and 29 Big Bash games. The left-arm orthodox spinner has taken 288 first-class wickets at an average of 33 with 11 five-wicket hauls. He has also snared 71 list A wickets.

Ben King (AFL)

Since being drafted to Gold Coast at pick six in the 2019 draft, Ben King has been an exciting prospect in the game. In his first two seasons at the Gold Coast he has led the goalkicking in the team. At Haileybury he was a star on the field but also off it achieving an ATAR score of 96.35.

Max King (AFL)

It has been a promising start to the AFL career of Max King who has played 60 games for St Kilda since he was drafted to the club at pick four in 2020. He has kicked 112 goals and was the leading goalkicker for the club in 2021 and 2022. Like his twin brother Ben, Max also achieved on and off the field at Haileybury College where he was a student. He scored an impressive ATAR of 97.8 in his final year of high school education.

Amy Lawton (Hockey)

At 21, Amy Lawton has already played 19 games for Australia in hockey. After debuting for the Hockeyroos in 2019, she was presented with the Emerging Athlete of the Year award at the AIS awards.

Stewart Loewe (AFL)

Between 1986 and 2002, Stewart Loewe played 321 games for St Kilda and kicked 594 goals. He was a member of the All-Australian team in 1991 and 1992, a club best and fairest winner in 1990 and a club leading goalkicker in 1995 and 1996. He is also a member of the club’s Team of the Century team.

Stefan Martin (AFL)

In 14 seasons of AFL football, Stefan Martin has played 202 games across three clubs. He played 133 games with Brisbane, 57 with Melbourne and 12 games with the Western Bulldogs in his last season in 2021. He was the Brisbane club champion in 2015.

James Pattinson (Cricket)

The exciting energetic fast bowler played 21 test matches for Australia, 15 one-day internationals, 89 first-class matches and 68 list A games. He took four five-fa’s in his test cricket career with best figures of 5-27 on debut against New Zealand in 2011. In his first class career for Victorian between season 2008-09 to 2021-22, he took 350 wickets.

Oscar Piastri (Formula One)

At 21, Oscar Piastri is already making big strides in the race driving world. He will be driving for McLaren in the 2023 Formula One World Championships. Piastri previously served as a reserve driver for the Alpine F1 team. He became the sixth ever driver to win the GP2/Formula 2 Championship in their rookie season.

Robert Rose (Cricket/AFL)

A dual sporting professional who played in the VFL and first-class cricket during the 1970s. He played 19 first-class matches for Victoria in three seasons, scoring 981 runs at an average of 30.65. He played for Collingwood for three seasons and moved to Footscray in his final season in 1974. A car crash in 1974 meant he couldn’t continue his sporting career.

Laetisha Scanlan (Shooting)

A three-time Commonwealth Games Olympic gold medallist, Laetisha Scanlan achieve the feat in a trap pairs event at the 2010 Delhi games and in both the 2014 Glasgow and 2018 Gold Coast trap events. She came fourth in the women’s trap event in the 2022 Summer Olympics.

Tom Scully (AFL)

Taken at pick 1 in the 2009 national draft, Tom Scully went on to play 187 AFL games in his 10-year career. He played 31 games for Melbourne before moving to the newly established GWS team in 2012 where he played 121 games. The midfielder finished his career with Hawthorn playing 35 games.

Ty Vickery (AFL)

The ruck/forward played 125 games for Richmond, finishing his career at the club in 2016, before they went on to win three premierships in four seasons. He then played six games at Hawthorn in 2017 where he was the Box Hill leading goalkicker.

Cody Weightman (AFL)

The exciting forward has played 38 games for Western Bulldogs since 2020 and scored 63 goals. Weightman captained Haileybury in his final year of school under AFL Hall of Famer Matthew Lloyd as coach.
