APS Cricket: Will Scott, Oliver Peake among key performers

APS Cricket will return this weekend as some of the state's best young talents look to put on a show. Here's who to keep an eye on.

It has been an exciting start to the APS Cricket season with plenty of close matches on display featuring some of the most promising youngsters in the country.

The school competition has seen hundreds and five-fa’s on multiple occasions while some players have surprised with breakout performances.

Here’s the key players shaping the APS Cricket season.

Oliver Warburton, Caulfield

Look out, Oliver Warburton has taken a consistent three wickets in each of his first three games of the season. He has also been economical by going for less than four an over on average this campaign. His nine wickets has him second in the wickets tally.

Ollie Peake, Geelong Grammar

A strong contributor with both bat and ball in every game he has played this season. Oliver Peake, the son of former state cricketer Clinton, has been a star for Geelong Grammar this season. He has scored three half centuries and taken five-fa in his three of his matches this season. His five-wicket haul came against reigning premiers Melbourne Grammar which led to bowling them out for a total of 159. With the bat, he has scored 84, 67 and 53 which puts him second in competition aggregate runs tally with 204.

Will Scott, Wesley

Arguably the leading player in the APS cricket competition with his consistency being a standout trait. Will Scott leads the competition in aggregate runs with his tally of 251 runs made up by his 24, 58*, 124* and 45. His hard-fought century against Haileybury was a reason to idolise his talent. Scott is also equal third in the wicket taking tally with eight. He has taken two or more wickets in every game except for the first match where he got one.

Jeremy Murray, Brighton

The leading wicket taker in the competition with 10, Jeremy Murray had been a standout performer with two or more wickets in every game except for one. He took a five-fa in the opening round against Carey where he dismissed the top three and help bowl them out for 89 with figures of 5-12 from 8.5 overs. He has been a big part of Brighton’s 3-1 start to the season.

Alex Turner, Brighton

A handy all-rounder for Brighton who has scored 157 and taken three wickets to start the season. Alex Turner has bowled 10 overs in every game except for one and been economical. With the bat he has scores of 23*, 0, 89 and 45 and comes sixth in aggregate runs.

Henry Melville, Geelong Grammar

The skipper of Geelong Grammar has impressive scores of 14, 70* and 107* to start the season. He is coming third in the aggregate runs with a total of 191 runs at a huge average of 191. Henry Melville has no doubt been a big reason for why Geelong Grammar are undefeated so far this season.

Moe Spencer, Brighton

The skipper of Brighton has two half centuries to start the season. Batting at number four, Moe Spencer has scores of 14, 81, 54 and 20 and has been a rock for Brighton who are second on the ladder with a 3-1 win-loss record. His scores have him coming fifth in the competition leading run scorers.

Samuel Mazza, St Kevin’s

Handy with bat and ball, Samuel Mazza has been a highlight for St Kevin’s this season. He has scored two half centuries and taken five wickets in total. A promotion from four to three after the first game has seemed to pay off for Mazza who has since gone 34, 65 and 52. With the ball he has been economical with his standout game coming against Brighton where he sneered 3-42 from 10 overs.

Jordie McElhone, St Kevin’s

One of the most exciting players in the APS Cricket competition this season, Jordie McElhone has featured with both bat and ball this season. The all-rounder smacked an 81 from 97 balls in the first game against Geelong Grammar batting at number nine. He the got a promotion to eight where he has hit 44 and 25 since. With the ball, he has also be handy taking five wickets in total with three against Geelong Grammar a highlight.

Benjamin Wickham, Xavier

With 186 runs, Benjamin Wickham is coming fourth in the aggregate runs to start the season. He has been a big part in Xavier’s undefeated 4-0 start with scores of 101*, 24, 48* and 13. The highlight was his century in the opening round against Caulfield Grammar.

Harry Jones, Scotch

Harry Jones has been the leader of the Scotch attack taking eight wickets so far this season, the equal third most in the competition. He has been a consistent wicket taker with a wicket in every game. His 3-45 off eight overs was a strong outing while his 2-8 from eight overs against Wesley was also a stunning feat. Jones has also contributed with the bat with 21*, 27* and 4.

Charlie Larson, Geelong College

At the top of the order Larsen has been a strong contributor for Geelong College. He has two half centuries to his name from three matches. His scores of 18, 54 and 70 have been important and impressive for College. He is sure to be a player to watch this season.
