Unlicensed woman, 23, with drug-driving record blames cost of Ubers for getting behind wheel

A LEAD-FOOTED young woman with two pages of traffic priors has blamed the cost of Ubers for getting behind the wheel without a licence.

What happens in a criminal trial?

A YOUNG leadfoot with a dreadful driving history has been warned she’ll end up behind bars if she speeds behind the wheel while drugged or disqualified again.

The 23-year-old, who has pages of traffic priors, was told she could be jailed if she puts another foot wrong.

Michaela Huggan pleaded guilty to more driving crimes at Frankston Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday.

The court heard Huggan was seen by police doing 94km/h in an 80km/h zone along Graydens Rd in Moorooduc on October 26 last year.

She was pulled over and it was discovered the P-plater had been disqualified in May for six months for excessive speeding.

She also didn’t have her P-plates displayed.

She told police she knew she wasn’t supposed to be driving, but wanted to get home.

In court she defended herself, saying she had been abiding by the disqualification but had run out of money for Ubers to get to and back from university.

The court heard she has significant history including refusing a drug test, failing a drug test, excessive speeding and driving while suspended.

Magistrate Dominic Lennon said Huggan was only 23 and already had two pages of traffic criminality on her record.

“You simply don’t comply with road rules, you have no respect,” Mr Lennon said.

“People go to jail all the time for driving offences.”

He said another driving indiscretion would likely mean she would join them behind bars.

Huggan accepted she used to have no regard for traffic laws, but said that had changed since the birth of her baby and she promised to behave better in the future.

She was convicted, fined $1000 and had her licence disqualified again, this time for 12 months.
