Ice addiction almost destroys family

AN ICE addict went on a reckless road rampage in search of his former girlfriend, smashing his car into strangers’ homes and leading police on a perilous pursuit.

Peter Joel Wright, 30, of Hampton Park, appeared at Dandenong Magistrates’ Court via videolink today and pleaded guilty to a plethora of charges relating to an “extraordinary” spate of offending.

The court heard his afternoon of mayhem began at 4.35pm on August 14 this year.

Wright had gone to the front door of a stranger’s Berwick home, demanding to be let in to see someone called ‘Lauren’.

The man who lived there told him to leave, which he did, but he then returned, picked up a block of wood and smashed house windows.

Wright left in his silver Chrysler and about an hour later, while holding an axe, broke into a Pakenham play centre.

He then purposely crashed his car twice into a neighbouring building site before a bystander confronted him and he again drove off.

By now police were on his tail and gave chase along Racecourse Rd in Pakenham.

One of his tyres was punctured but he still raced on, crossing over onto the wrong side of Princes Highway before getting away from police.

At 6.23pm he arrived at a Pakenham house and used his car to ram the property, again shouting out for ‘Lauren’.

He reversed into a school fence, drove into another garage door and then back onto Princes Highway.

He then finally pulled his badly-damaged vehicle into a car park, where he was arrested.

Officers found him “substance affected” and he refused a drug test.

His defence lawyer said Wright was enduring a severe psychotic episode due to his ice use and ‘Lauren’ was a former girlfriend.

Magistrate Julie O’Donnell said the spate of offending was “quite extraordinary” and the victims would have been absolutely terrified.

She adjourned sentencing until after a psychiatric examination had been done.
