Police said a 38-year-old man pushed the offender back to stop him coming in, before the would-be thief fled on foot empty-handed.

Two other women inside the house, a 19-year-old and 37-year-old, were uninjured.

The man is described as aged in his late 20s to early 30s, Islander-Maori in appearance and about 177cm tall with dark hair.

He was wearing long sleeved dark T-shirt, dark colour pants and dark shoes.
