A CARPENTER who carved his way across several lanes of highway in a high-speed police chase has had six months chipped off of his driving licence.

The Hallam man — who was disqualified at the time — hit 140km/h in the early morning pursuit before managing to get away.

Jarryd Leigh Westhead pleaded guilty to dangerous driving and other traffic charges at Dandenong Magistrates’ Court on September 11.

The court heard he was seen on Burwood Highway at 3am on July 24 last year in a car registered with WA plates.

When police tried to intercept him, with lights flashing and sirens sounding, he sped off, crossing lanes as he accelerated away.

The chasing police car reached 140km/h before they abandoned the pursuit as it was becoming dangerous.

His car was later located and he handed himself in to police, admitting he was the driver but saying he didn’t realise officers had wanted him to pull over.

His defence lawyer said Westhead had no court priors for traffic offending, with the disqualification due to too many demerit points.

He said he was remorseful, apologetic and accepted his driving was unacceptable.

In court Westhead said he now used a pushbike to get around, which was good for his fitness.

Magistrate Barry Schultz said there was a very real risk that such “inexplicable” offending could have led to a culpable driving charge.

He said it was “well-up there” for bad driving and deserved a fine, ban and education.

Westhead was convicted, fined $1000, disqualified from driving for six months and ordered to undergo a safe driving program.
