Timothy Stevenson sexually assaulted, flashed student at a bus stop because he enjoys prison life

A Mornington Peninsula man has spent so much time in jail he has begun to like it. And to get back he has been committing some disgusting crimes.

A jailbird who loves prison life sexually assaulted a woman at a bus stop because he wanted to be sent back to Port Phillip, a court has heard.

Timothy Stevenson also indecently exposed himself to a female corrections worker, smeared faeces around a police cell and falsely accused a male jail officer of raping him.

The 32-year-old Peninsula man also admitted setting fire to his bedroom while his carers were inside his house and lighting up a wheelie bin outside a car parts shop.

When he was arrested he said he “enjoyed the attention of the CFA and police officers” and would like to go back to Port Phillip Prison where he felt comfortable.

Stevenson pleaded guilty to eight arson, assault and indecency-related charges at Frankston Magistrates’ Court on Thursday.

The court heard at 7.20am on March 31 this year a 26-year-old female student was waiting at a Punt Rd, South Yarra bus stop.

Stevenson walked up to her, pulled down his pants and exposed his penis to her.

She felt scared and disgusted and walked away, but he followed.

Her bus arrived and as she tried to get on Stevenson came up behind her and grabbed her buttocks.

She yelled at him and he sat back down at the bus stop and she called police.

Officers came minutes later and found Stevenson running through traffic, and he was arrested.

On October 14 last year while he was at Ravenhall correctional facility he falsely accused a male guard of raping him.

On January 11 this year at the same place a female worker was cleaning an area near where Stevenson was when he exposed his genitalia and “mooned” her.

He didn’t like Ravenhall so committed offences so he could try to be moved to Port Phillip, he said.

On July 3 at 4.30am he went to a Peninsula auto parts store and set fire to cardboard and a wheelie bin before calmly walking across the road to a 7-Eleven and buying a coffee.

After he was returned to his supported accommodation he set fire to his bedclothes and a kitchen bin while his carers were there.

In April while on remand at Frankston police station he “bronzed up” and smeared poo around his cell walls.

Stevenson, who has a very low intellect and serious mental health issues, has a long history of similar crimes.

His defence lawyer said he needed full-time care, and “much of his offending is done so he can return back to prison where he feels safe”.

Magistrate Vicky Prapas said the judiciary should not have to deal with problems which obviously involved serious issues of mental health.

“There is a potential for an ongoing cycle (of reoffending) for him to get what he perceives to be a return to a better environment,” Ms Prapas said.

“He seems to be completely institutionalised, it seems like we are rewarding him (for his crimes) by imprisoning him.”

Stevenson was remanded in custody and will be sentenced on October 2.
