A promising soccer star who played for Melbourne Victory’s youth team has faced court on serious gun, drugs and weapons charges.

Brandon Joseph Jansz was nabbed with a handgun, more than $2600 in cash, knuckle dusters, a knife, cocaine and ice after he was pulled over for speeding in the early hours of the morning in Dandenong in July.

The 20-year-old had attended the Rowville Sports Academy and played for teams in South Melbourne, Mornington, Springvale and Langwarrin as well as being a youth player for Victory.

Jansz first faced Dandenong Magistrates’ Court in July and pleaded guilty to nine drug trafficking, driving, firearms and weapons charges, and was bailed on a sentence deferral.

He appeared in court again on Tuesday for an update on progress on a community integrated support program, and will be sentenced later this year.

The court heard at around 2am on July 7 this year Jansz was seen speeding in a black ute along Heatherton Rd in Dandenong.

Police followed and pulled him over for a check, which uncovered the fact the P-plater was suspended from driving at the time.

A search of his car found $2620 in cash, a black handgun, knuckle dusters, a folding knife, and a bumbag containing 5g of cocaine and .1g of ice.

When officers searched his Cardinia address later that morning they found empty deal bags and remnants of cocaine in his bedroom.

His defence lawyer said he was a good soccer player who had lost his tradie job earlier this year.

She said he recently started to use cocaine and had bought the gun to onsell for more money to buy more drugs.

She said he had no priors of any kind, was remorseful and the arrest was “a wake-up call” for him.

Magistrate Jack Vandersteen said Jansz was doing very well on the support program but told him he needed more time before he could be sentenced.

“You’re still a young person, you’ve done everything asked of you (on the program), and you have no prior history,” Mr Vandersteen said.

“You have excellent family support, and your prospects of rehabilitation are enhanced.

“(But) I don’t want you relapsing, I don’t want you reoffending.”

Jansz will be sentenced on November 13.
