A TRIATHLETE assaulted, abused and threatened a former lover because he was unhappy with how she had spoken to his mother.

Jarrod Adams, aged 47, pleaded guilty to assault-related charges at Frankston Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday.

He had met the woman at the Mornington Peninsula Triathlon Club and they were together for 14 months, but split up several months ago.

The court heard after they were separated they would continue to train at the same venues.

But on May 28 at a Mt Eliza swimming pool things turned nasty.

Adams approached the woman, yelling and abusing her regarding the way she had talked to his mother over the phone.

Witnesses had to intervene and the woman was escorted to a change room, saying she was in fear.

A month later, on June 19 at a training program in Frankston, the woman was stood near the rear of her car when Adams came up to her.

He threw her handbag on the floor, grabbed and pushed her before uttering that he will “break her legs” and “she will never run again”.

Again bystanders interjected and Adams left the scene.

He was arrested the day after, and gave a no comment interview.

In court his defence lawyer said he was “emotionally raw” after the “devastating” breakup.

He said he was upset the woman had rung his mother inquiring about him while he was in hospital and suggesting she needed to look after him better.

Magistrate Dominic Lennon said Adams already had a prior history offence of reckless cause injury, which was a concern.

“If someone provokes him, he resorts to violence,” Mr Lennon said.

“He is unable to control himself if he perceives himself to be pushed.”

Adams was given a 12-month community corrections order involving unpaid work and counselling programs.
