He lives only metres from the club’s home ground.
And now Aston Rupee, the world’s fastest greyhound, has an even stronger connection to Devon Meadows Cricket Club after becoming its No. 1 ticket-holder for the 2021-22 season.
The Panthers signed him on the weekend, although it was difficult getting him to hold a pen.
“We’re proud to be associated with such an outstanding greyhound,” said Devon Meadows president Mick Floyd, who is pictured with Aston Rupee and club coach Lucas Light.
“He’s a genuine star – one of greyhound racing’s most brilliant athletes.”
From his kennel next to Glover Reserve, Aston Rupee can probably hear the sounds of bat on ball at Devon Meadows Cricket Club training.
The champion is the Sandown Park track record holder and has won the group 1 Topgun and winner-takes-all Shootout at his past two starts.
He is favourite for this week’s Melbourne Cup series, and if successful in the world’s greatest greyhound race, he will become just the second greyhound after Hall Of Famer Bombastic Shiraz to claim the ‘Triple Crown’.
Aston Rupee’s trainer Glenn Rounds and owner Ray Borda knew they had something special on their hands when Aston Rupee broke the Warragul track record before making his racing debut last December, but it’s his popularity off the track that has surprised the duo.
“The ride he’s taken Ray and I on has been amazing,” said Rounds.
“It’s important that we as trainers and owners do what we can to bring new people into our sport and show the public what fantastic animals greyhounds are.
“We’re looking forward to the Devon Meadows Cricket Club’s support as we aim for the biggest races on the greyhound racing calendar.”
At just 31 months of age, Aston Rupee has won 18 of 31 starts — including four at group level — and over $370,000 in prize money.
The heats of the $762,500 Melbourne Cup will be run at Sandown Park on Friday, November 19, with the final to be run on Friday, November 26.
Devon Meadows will be hoping Aston Rupee’s winning ways rub off on it this season.
