A pair of Camberwell Magpies rising stars produced performances some cricketers can only dream of in a Premier Cricket under-18s game where a Carlton opponent almost stole the show.

Camberwell Magpies under-18 boys coach Ben Ryan can’t speak highly enough of the performances he witnessed during his side’s win over Carlton.

Ed Winneke was the first rising star to impress after posting 127 runs off 132 balls for the Magpies as his side reached 8-270 from its 50 overs on Sunday afternoon.

It was a performance only equalled by Carlton’s Keir Lucas who hit 109 off 199 in his side’s run chase only for the Blues to fall short by 26 runs.

“Two fantastic innings, a really high standard of cricket,” Ryan said.

The left-handed Winneke is in his second season with the Magpies’ under-18s program and has been named his side’s captain for this season.

Ryan described him as a “360 degree player with his real strength through the offside”.

“He has great leadership qualities and it made him the natural choice as captain for us,” he said.

“It was an outstanding innings. He came out on the third ball of the innings and raced to about 20 off 15 and helped to take out the air out of their start.”

While Winneke’s runs were the standout factor in his performance, combining with Jobe Fraser was another reason their side was able to come away with the win.

Fraser produced a brilliant all-round performance with 46 off 52 and match defining bowling figures of 6-38 off 10 overs.

“Ed actually bowled some nice medium pace to help stem the flow of Carlton’s innings then he made the decision to bring Jobe on with his leg spin,” Ryan said.

“We’re hopeful of getting to see both boys play some senior cricket throughout the season outside of their school commitments. They put on a 96-run partnership at a really important part of the game.

“Jobe has a really good wrong-un, he bowls about three an over, which can be really tough to pick.”

Carlton’s head of junior development Todd Marchant sang the praises of Lucas.

“He’s been in our program for a few years and that’s really important for us to have a continued connection,” he said.

“A really good start with a half-century in the first game as well. He’s taken on the responsibility as our captain really well.

“We’ve got some really good talent coming through. Aryan Sharma played in our First XI on the weekend and grabbed a couple of wickets including Damon Egan, not a bad wicket to get.”

Ted Bain hit a century for Geelong.

Meanwhile, Geelong’s Ted Bain hit a century of his own in the Cats’ 42-run win over Footscray.

It was the third century in the second round of the competition.

Batting at six, Bain stroked an even 100 off 116 deliveries with 10 boundaries as the Cats posted 231 batting first at Merv Hughes Oval.

Geelong coach Josh Mastin said Bain showed his maturity by batting lower down the order than normal but still posted a century against Footscray.

“He’s captained at Geelong College so he has an understanding of being a leader on the field,” Mastin said.

“He’s been really committed to improving his batting and focused on what he’s trying to get better at.

“He’s trying to develop as a top order player, but we’re giving him opportunities to bat in different positions.

“It’s beneficial for his game, that showed on the weekend that he was able to play a different role for us.

“It was really controlled and composed, he was never really flustered.”
