Devon Meadows a chance to join the MPCA in season 2021-22

The MPCA is gearing up for changes next season, with the possibility of a new club, fixture alterations and a radical split competition.

Mornington Peninsula Cricket Association president Stephen Morone says Devon Meadows would be made most welcome if it was to make the move from the West Gippsland association.

Devon Meadows approached the MPCA in March, registering its interest in joining.

Morone confirmed discussions were continuing with the Panthers, who fielded five senior sides and a full compliment of junior teams in the WGCA last season.

The last time the MPCA added a club was in 1999, when Carrum joined.

“Yes, Devon Meadows would like to come across to us,” Morone said.

“They’re still talking to us and we’re still talking to them.

“And I’ve had discussions with the WGCA.”

Morone said Devon Meadows would slot into the Sub District competition if it did join the MPCA in 2021-22.

That would make it 11 sides in Subbies.

It’s likely French Island, which has won the past two A1 flags, would be asked to return to Sub District to make it an even number of sides — 12 — so as to avoid a bye.

Morone even suggested Subbies could be divided into two competitions.

“Whether or not we could have a split group of two sixes,” he said.

“I mean there are different possibilities.

“But nothing’s decided and the thing won’t happen until we talk to the Sub District clubs anyway...about how they feel they want it to go.

“Most clubs want an even match up.”

Morone also said two-day cricket would return to the MPCA next season.

Last season was entirely made up of one-dayers due to the COVID-19 affected late start, but a return to a combination of one and two day games was on the cards in ‘21-22.

“At this stage we’re aiming for two dayers and one dayers but we’re five months away and things can change very rapidly,” Morone said.

The MPCA is also seeking applications for the position of general manager. Details: Stephen Morone 0428 004 154.
