Phone scammers impersonating ATO officers targeting people in Melbourne’s south

SCAMMERS pretending to be from the ATO are targeting people in Melbourne’s south and police have warned people to take extra care. Here’s what you need to know to avoid being caught out.

How to Turn the Tables on a Phone Scammer

SAVVY scammers out to fleece people of their hard earned cash are now impersonating debt collectors.

Police say residents in Melbourne’s southern suburbs are being targeted by phone scammers and are warning people to check the call before handing over any money.

A number of people have contacted police stating they have received a phone call from someone claiming to be from the Australian Taxation Office (ATO) and they have an outstanding tax debt.

The caller then tells the victim there is also an arrest warrant out due to the outstanding debt and if they don’t pay they will be arrested.

The victim is then told to stay on the phone and go to their local back to withdraw a large amount of money before depositing the cash into a specific ATM.

Police are warning potential victims to check if a call from the ATO is legit by calling them on 1800 008 540 or emailing first.

Consumer Affairs advises people to protect themselves from scammers by taking the following steps:

*Be wary of online sellers offering goods and well-known brands at extremely low prices.

*Do not provide an upfront payment to a stranger via money order or wire transfer.

*When selling items online, do not follow the links in a payment notification email to check whether the payment has arrived — log into your account directly.

*With online dating, do not send money to someone you have never met, even if you have spoken to them or received gifts.

*Always inspect a property you want to rent before sending any money.

*Be wary of unsolicited emails, phone calls or letters saying you have unclaimed funds or are owed money.

*Do not let anyone pressure you into making quick investment decisions.

*Never send off money or bank details to claim a prize.
