Hampton Park man harassed his ex with bizarre ‘corrupt sex cult’ claims

He was told not to contact his ex-partner but ignored the court order. Instead the Hampton Park man went on a bewildering text rampage, saying she was involved in a “corrupt sex cult”.

A man who harassed his ex-partner with a barrage of bizarre texts – including that she belonged to a “corrupt police sex cult” – is now behind bars.

Brian Michael Leydon was forbidden from contacting the woman by a court but instead texted her 18 times, leaving her scared for her safety.

The Hampton Park 37-year-old, who spent his birthday in custody, was serving a community corrections order for criminal damage and assault charges at the time.

He pleaded guilty to three offences at Dandenong Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday, with another 43 charges dropped.

The court heard Leydon, who has a brain injury from a car accident when he was aged 17, sent a stream of disturbing messages to the woman over a week-long period in late June this year.

He had used his own phone to send the rants, and police arrested him at his home on July 2.

He told officers he didn’t want to be interviewed because “police were involved” in her “corrupt sex cult” and they were colluding with the woman to trap him.

His defence lawyer said he had long periods of abstinence from drug use, but stresses and substance issues, combined with his brain injury, caused him to have “impulsive and irrational tendencies” from time to time.

He said the “almost unintelligible” text messages were erratic, rambling and bizarre, but accepted they may have put the woman in fear.

He said Leydon should be released as soon as possible as he had already spent 40 days on remand.

Magistrate Suzette Dootjes said it was very concerning he committed these crimes when he was meant to be serving an order that had been imposed just months before.

She said she believed more time in jail could be appropriate, and adjourned the case for Leydon to be reassessed for another corrections order.
